These are often mistaken for corns but are caused by a virus and are very contagious. The surface of the infected skin is generally rough or granular and irregular in shape.
LOCATION They are most commonly found on the sole of the foot in areas of pressure but can also occur in other areas, including between the toes. CAUSES Verrucas are caused by a virus, which enters through damaged skin. Swimming baths and changing rooms are a major source of infection. The problem is very prevalent amongst school children. TREATMENT Most verrucas are only troublesome when they cause pain. Many will disappear by themselves or they can be removed by freeze burning them with liquid nitrogen or by surgical removal. |
